My longstanding interest in parental health deepened significantly upon becoming a parent myself. I came to appreciate the profound transformations that individuals undergo during this pivotal life event. It often feels like a 'sink or swim' situation. Unfortunately, our contemporary society, policies, and cultural norms often fall short in adequately preparing individuals for the monumental changes parenthood entails, leaving many to navigate these uncharted waters, at times struggling to maintain their equilibrium.
Frequently, we humorously refer to 'baby brain,' 'dad bod,' or the aptly named 'father figure.' However, these phenomena have enduring implications for our overall health, encompassing both physical and mental well-being. So, what truly underlies these changes, and why do they often accompany parenthood? Would we opt for change if we could? Undoubtedly.
We live in an era marked by a wealth of knowledge about health and disease prevention. Paradoxically, we tend to prioritize the treatment or, more commonly, the masking of symptoms as a supposed quick fix. Yet, our health isn't improving; instead, we accumulate a compounding set of issues.
Within the resources offered on this platform, I will provide the latest scientific insights into both the 'what' and 'why' behind the changes our bodies and minds and social interactions experienced after becoming parents. Armed with this scientific understanding, and reflective learning activities we can more effectively commit to reshaping our approach to life, altering our perspectives on events, and enhancing our relationships with both ourselves and others.
